From Our President

Welcome to East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club, located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The Rotary International theme for this Rotary Year (through June 2022) is “Serve To Change Lives.”  This theme is particularly relevant and on point, as it articulates the central focus of Rotary and what we’re all about, Service Above Self, and it further points to the profound and powerful impact that Rotary Clubs have had and will continue to have in our communities.  As a Rotarian and a member of East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club since 2016, I have witnessed first hand how our club’s fundraising initiatives and service projects have positively influenced our community, and especially our designated charities and the institutions, groups and individuals we have benefitted with our many service projects.

As we Serve To Change Lives as Rotarians, membership in Rotary enhances and enriches our own lives as well.  My membership in ECB Rotary Club has brought me meaningful friendships, the opportunity to refine and improve my leadership skills, fulfillment and satisfaction that comes with collaborating with fellow Rotarians to accomplish important and worthy goals, and an expanded network of key contacts, including my fellow club members, other Rotarians in our District 7770 and beyond, and our excellent guest speakers drawn from a broad range of all aspects of human endeavor.

The opportunity to Serve To Change Lives in Rotary is unlimited. As our Club has worked together to return to normal pre-COVID operations during this Rotary Year, we are reminded of the positive energy that comes with fellowship, collaboration, the sharing of ideas and perspectives, and striving toward common goals.  As a member of ECB Rotary Club I can confirm what millions other Rotarians have discovered in the decades since the first Rotary Club was founded in Chicago in 1905, which is that whatever might interest you personally or whatever your preferred approach might be toward volunteering, community leadership, social interaction and business networking, in Rotary you will surely find like-minded individuals who are ready and eager to combine their talents and energies with your own to produce achievements that are noteworthy and exemplary, that make a difference, and are something to be proud of and tell people about.

Among the international institutions and charities ECB Rotary Club has directly benefitted in recent years are Polio Plus, Water Mission International, and CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust). Locally we have partnered with East Cooper Community Outreach, East Cooper Meals On Wheels, Charleston Fisher House, and Charleston Promise Neighborhood to help make a difference and change lives for the better in our community.

Our primary fundraising initiative is Charleston Rotary Flags for Heroes.  Each year over Veteran’s Day weekend we present a breathtaking display of hundreds of American Flags on the grounds of Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.  Individuals, businesses, corporations and non-profits can sponsor the flag in honor of a hero of their choice, including veterans, active duty service members, first responders and medical professionals.  We also participate in the annual Charleston Duck Race held in June on Daniel Island. The proceeds from this event are used to fund Rotary community service programs locally and around the world. Each of the Participating Rotary Clubs designates one or more Lowcountry charities as named beneficiaries of the Duck Race. Our beneficiaries have been East Cooper Meals on Wheels and East Cooper Community Outreach.

Our club meetings are held on the first three Tuesdays of each month at the Cooper River Room at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park, located at 99 Harry M. Hallman Jr. Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.  There is ample parking in surface lots across the street from the facility.  Breakfast is served and we have a speaker at each meeting.  We welcome guests and anyone interested in Rotary to come to a meeting and see what we’re all about.  We have no doubt you will see and appreciate the many upsides and benefits to joining our club, on both a personal and professional level. In addition to meeting in person, for the time being we are also continuing to facilitate online attendance out our meetings via Zoom.  If you wish to attend online, please email us at and we will be happy to send you a link.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Sean A. O’Connor
