2015 Toys for Tots

Thanks to generous donations from the community, the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club donated 110 bicycles to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. WCBD Meteorologist Rob Fowler and members of the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program were on hand at the Rotary meeting December 8th at the Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park to accept the bikes. The Marine Corps says that they collect about 40,000 toys to give to approximately 10,000 children at Christmas time.  A matching grant of $2600 from the District Simplified Grant, plus an additional $1800 from the Club’s 501c3 and member donations, yielded over 110 bikes for a total value of almost $7000.

ToysForTots-9Throughout the year, the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club raises funds to be able to donate hundreds of bikes to Toys for Tots. Please join us Tuesday, December 8th as we present these gifts to Toys for Tots  at our regular meeting time and place.  The Cooper River Room at the Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Park at 7:30 a.m.  If you have a new bike you’d like to donate, bring it along to add to the collection!

We encourage all club members to purchase a bike to contribute to the cause and join us on Monday, Dec. 7th at  5:30-7:00 PM at the Wal-Mart at Oakland Plantation as we gather all bikes together and get a group photo.  We will take the picture at 6:15 PM, so if members can only drop by to purchase a bike, please try to be there for the picture.  Park in the right side parking lot, towards the back.  There is a container and a shed on the right and fencing for the Lawn and Garden section on the left.  Save time Tuesday morning by buying or bringing a new bike Monday night and being there for the photo!

The 2nd Annual Oktoberfest 5K Run/Walk brought out 250 runners and walkers along with many more attendees for the after party.

The event benefits Toys for Tots and the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Perfect weather and a great venue starting and ending at the Sweetgrass Pavilion underneath the Ravenel Bridge created an excellent setting complete with music by a German band, beer on tap provided by Westbrook Brewery and Palmetto Brewing Co. and plenty of bratwurst prepared in outstanding fashion by our friends from ServiceMaster of Charleston. A big thank you goes out to Lawton Hayes and his crew for all of their hard work with the event.

We want to thank our chairman for the event, Mike Bloser, for putting together such an awesome event. Wearing his Lederhosen, Mike really gave this party authenticity. Thanks for all of your hard work Mike. Through your efforts, the event hopes to net around $5,000 for the charities. Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make this event a success.

A special thanks to Rob Fowler with News 2 for reporting the weather from the event. Their support helped boost attendance.
