On July 20th the East Cooper Rotaract Club will be sweeping all the way to the Windjammer!

Meet us on the Isle of Palms beach at 28th Avenue at 9:30am!

Lunch and drinks to follow at the Windjammer at approximately 11am!

All are welcome for this family friendly- kid friendly event!

Please bring $10 if you’d like to buy a Rotaract T-shirt to support the club! Shirts may also be purchased using Venmo at the event!

Our next meeting will be held July 9th at 7:30am in the Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park Visitors Center. This meeting will be our club assembly and we will hear from Ted Chestnut, our 2019-2020 club President on his plans for the coming year.

This year’s Rotary theme is “Rotary Connects the World”.

Breakfast will be catered by Dish and Design Catering.

Join us for the 12th annual Francis Marion National Forest Cleanup, Saturday, February 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Volunteers can choose between five locations around the forest prior to the event. Please contact Scott Morgan, smorgan@palmettopride.org, to pre-register for a specific location near you. All other volunteers should meet at the US Forest Service Office, 2967 Steed Creek Rd, Huger, SC.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts and sturdy shoes. Gloves, bags and vests will be provided. Weather-appropriate outerwear is recommended.

Lunch will be served to all volunteers and staff.

Directions

From Georgetown: Take HWY 17 S approximately 33 miles to Steed Creek Road (Road #10-1032)

From Monks Corner: Take HWY 52 to HWY 402 to Huger. Cross over Hwy 41 at the flashing red light and you will be on Steed Creek Road. Forest Service Center is 3 miles on your right.

From Mt. Pleasant/I-526: Take HWY 17. Drive 5.2 miles past the Sewee Visitor Center and turn left on Steed Creek Road. Forest Service Center is approximately 9 miles on the left.

Saturday, October 20th 7:30-10am, the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will partner with the Rotary Club of Mt. Pleasant to provide free shoes to deserving school students in the East Cooper area. The Mount Pleasant Target Store will provide the venue and children will be given the opportunity to select and receive a new pair of shoes and socks. The event is also an opportunity for the Wando High School Interact Club, College of Charleston Roteract Club, and Rotary Youth Exchange Students to participate along side Rotarians as escort and shoe shopping assistants. This event is always a rewarding day, full of fellowship and fun.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Eric DeMoura, Town Administrator, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Mr. DeMoura was appointed to the position of town administrator in October 2010. He currently manages nine departments, 700 employees, and a $158 million annual budget for the fourth largest municipality in South Carolina. Mr. DeMoura has received the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association. Prior to his appointment as town administrator, Mr. DeMoura served as deputy town administrator for four years.

Prior to joining the Town of Mount Pleasant, Mr. DeMoura held the position of deputy mayor in Taunton, Massachusetts, where he assisted the mayor in the management of 30 city departments and a $130 million budget. As chief advisor to the mayor, he lobbied state and federal governments to secure funding and improve education and aging infrastructure. Reforming budget processes, purchasing procedures, and personnel policies defined the quality of his position in Taunton.

Additional experience included the position of County Manager of Caswell County, North Carolina, where Mr. DeMoura began his public service. Highlights included the management of 23 county departments, 250 employees, and a $20 million budget.

Mr. DeMoura is a graduate of Clemson University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in public administration. He also holds a County Administration Certification from the University of North Carolina.

Mr. DeMoura is past president of the South Carolina City and County Management Association. He is a member of the International City / County Management Association and the South Carolina City and County Management Association.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, September 25th, 2018 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Brian Rowe, Managing Director of Pure Theatre, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Brian Rowe is now entering his third season as Managing Director at PURE Theatre, a professional theatre company dedicated to presenting in the Lowcountry award-winning professional theatre that enlivens thought, ignites dialogue, and expands consciousness.  Prior to joining PURE, Brian served as a development officer and fundraising consultant for numerous non-profit organizations in the Baltimore-Washington region.  Brian holds an M.F.A. in Theatre Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Charleston (WV). He currently lives in West Ashley with his wife, Megan, and Sage, the best cat in the whole wide world.

Our club’s 2018-2019 Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Marie, arrived last week from France! Marie will be turning 17 on August 20th and she will be attending Wando High School. At our club meeting last week, Marie gave us a flag from her Rotary club in France and received our flag. If you see her at a meeting please introduce yourself! Marie loves meeting new people and traveling to new places. She is very active, enjoys shopping, and loves to cook. In France, Marie studies economics and wants to work in international relations. Marie enjoys swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball and she is about to have the best year of her life!

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Alan Berger, Executive Director of Pet Helpers Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

In 2017 Alan Berger joined Pet Helpers Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic in Charleston, SC as its Executive Director.  Pet Helpers is a nonprofit organization that was started in 1978 as the first NO-KILL animal shelter in the Lowcountry. It operates an animal shelter and adoption center, a spay/neuter clinic, a low cost vaccine clinic, and a humane education program.  It has grown to twenty five employees and an annual budget of $2 million.

Before joining Pet Helpers, Alan, with his wife, Leslie Armstrong, owned and operated several small businesses.  Most recent was Nana’s Donuts, a gourmet donut shop in Charleston producing organic, vegan donuts in a small batch processing environment.  Prior to Nana’s, they operated two small businesses in Asheville, NC.  For five years they owned an independent video rental store that focused on foreign, independent, art house, LGBT, documentary, and animal advocacy films.  In 2011with their partner and chef, Jason Sellers, they opened PLANT, a small upscale and highly acclaimed restaurant with a sophisticated, innovative, and totally vegan menu.

Earlier in his career, Alan Berger served for nine years as the Executive Director/CEO of the Animal Protection Institute (now Born Free USA) in Sacramento, CA.  He moved to Charleston, SC and joined the John Ancrum SPCA (now the Charleston Animal Society) in 2004 as its Executive Director.

Alan had been an Executive Director or Board member for nonprofit organizations in the fields of nature education, wildlife rehabilitation, domestic violence/sexual abuse, child abuse, blindness, AIDS, teenage employment, and homelessness.  Alan is an MBA/CPA and completed the ABD stage of a Ph.D. program in business management.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Dr. Arnold Hite, Professor of Economics and Dean of the School of Business at Charleston Southern University, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Dr. Arnold Hite is a professor of economics in the College of Business at Charleston Southern University. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from Clemson University and a PhD in economics from Texas A&M University.

Before arriving at Charleston Southern, he served on the faculty at Clemson, Texas A&M and The Citadel. While at Charleston Southern he has served in several administrative positions including director of the Center for Economic Education, director of a special program in environmental management, department chair and dean.

Dr. Hite’s teaching interests include macroeconomic theory, international trade, the history of economic thought and price theory.  His current research interest includes income inequality measures and economic forecast assessment.

The International Rotary Club’s theme this past year was “Make A Difference.” And, the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club took that theme and put it into action with numerous community service activities, The Club, which consists of 50 members, raised $32,000 at its 2nd Annual East Cooper Speakeasy fundraiser; donated and delivered 73 books to the Mary Ford Elementary School for its Literacy Program; volunteered for East Cooper Habitat for Humanity, East Cooper Meals On Wheels, and East Cooper Community Outreach;  participated in a Global Grant project with Water Missions International; joined forces with the Galveston Rotary Clubs to provide funds for the devastation in Houston after Hurricane Irma; participated in Happy Feet with the Mt. Pleasant Lunch Club to provide shoes to 212 children in the Lowcountry; and volunteered at Toys for Tots where the Club donated 132 bikes to Lowcountry children.

The Club recently started a 30 under 30 program where membership dues are prorated for young professionals; and became a member of the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce to increase its presence in the community.
