East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club members will have an exclusive opportunity to receive online Narcan Training Tuesday, June 2nd at 8 a.m. This overdose prevention training is recommended for anyone at risk of an opioid overdose, friends, and family of someone at risk, healthcare providers, social services providers, law enforcement, and emergency response providers. You will learn how to recognize the signs of an overdose, the steps to administrating Narcan nasal spray, and how to save a life. Participants who complete the training may receive a free overdose prevention kit containing 2 Narcan nasal sprays. We encourage all members to attend this Zoom meeting, and if you have family or friends who would like to join, please forward their email addresses to Ted Chestnut ted@hillcon.com. The more knowledge we have as a group, the better we can serve our community in preventing opioid overdose and abuse.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Nanci Shipman,Wake Up Carolina, as our guest speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.
Nanci holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from the College of Charleston. She is the founder and executive director of WakeUp Carolina. WakeUp Carolina empowers young people, individuals and families by uniting our community to meet those who are suffering “where they are” with authenticity and unwavering support. They are a 501c3 organization founded to raise awareness, promote education and provide hope and improve the quality of life for those in recovery in the greater Charleston area.
All WakeUp Carolina services, including Creighton’s House, are 100% funded by generous donations and grants from citizens, corporations and government entities.
Her previous experience includes teaching elementary school and preschool, healthcare marketing and sales, hospice administrator and nonprofit regional director for senior outreach. Nanci is also active in business and healthcare associations, not-for-profit fundraising events and community boards. Nanci is the mother to five children. She grew up and resides in Mt. Pleasant with her four children.

Guest Speaker October 8: David Slade, Post and Courier Senior Reporter

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, October 8th, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have David Slade, Post and Courier reporter, as our guest speaker. David will be speaking on Mount Pleasant town government and civic issues. David Slade is a senior Post and Courier reporter. His work has been honored nationally by Society of Professional Journalists, American Society of Newspaper Editors, Scripps foundation and others. Reach him at 843-937-5552 or dslade@postandcourier.com
David Slade’s personal finance column appears most Sundays in The Post and Courier. He also reports on issues related to the Charleston metro area’s rapid population growth.
He has been a newspaper reporter since 1992 and joined The Post and Courier in 2004. Prior to joining the newspaper business, he worked for The College Board in New York, and covered the international gemstone industry for Colored Stone, a trade magazine in suburban Philadelphia.
Slade has reported on local, county, and state government for newspapers in Illinois, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. He has also covered law enforcement, courts, public schools, environmental matters, transportation and general assignments.
He holds a master’s degree from University of Illinois (the Sangamon State Public Affairs Reporting program) and a bachelor’s degree from Temple University. Slade has won state and national awards for his reporting on property taxation and governmental affairs.

September 10th Guest Speaker: Johnny Moore DG 2019-2020

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, September 10th, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Johnny Moore, Rotary district 7770 Governor 2019-2020, as our guest speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.
Johnny Moore is a member of the Rotary Club of Chapin Sunrise. He was born in Spartanburg, SC and graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1971. He enrolled at Clemson University in 1971 where he majored in Industrial Management and joined the Air Force ROTC program where he earned a four- year ROTC scholarship. He graduated in 1975 with a B.S. in Industrial Management and was a distinguished graduate of Air Force ROTC. He has worked in the garment manufacturing industry, the bottling industry, sold computers for four different companies and founded SouthMed, Inc. (now Signal Technologies, Inc.) in December 1992 which he owned until December 2018. Johnny joined the Rotary Club of St. Andrews-Columbia in September 2007 where he served as Club President for 2010-2011 and Foundation Chair for 2011-2012. He transferred to the Rotary Club of Chapin Sunrise effective July 1, 2012. He served as Assistant Governor for Area 3 of District 7770 for 2013-2016. Johnny was the District 7770 Membership Chair from July 2016 – June 2018. He is a Paul Harris Society Member, Paul Harris Fellow and a Bequest Society Member. He is married to the former Susan Anne Saine of Irmo, his college sweetheart; and they have been married for over 43 years. Johnny and Susan have three daughters all married to Godly young men and ten wonderful grandchildren. He is a member, choir member, drama ministry member and Elder (not currently serving) at St, Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo. Johnny’s hobbies include fishing, woodworking and shooting sporting clays.

Next Meeting July 9th: Rotary Connects the World

Our next meeting will be held July 9th at 7:30am in the Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park Visitors Center. This meeting will be our club assembly and we will hear from Ted Chestnut, our 2019-2020 club President on his plans for the coming year.
This year’s Rotary theme is “Rotary Connects the World”.

Francis Marion National Forest Cleanup

Join us for the 12th annual Francis Marion National Forest Cleanup, Saturday, February 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Volunteers can choose between five locations around the forest prior to the event. Please contact Scott Morgan, smorgan@palmettopride.org, to pre-register for a specific location near you. All other volunteers should meet at the US Forest Service Office, 2967 Steed Creek Rd, Huger, SC.
Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts and sturdy shoes. Gloves, bags and vests will be provided. Weather-appropriate outerwear is recommended.
Lunch will be served to all volunteers and staff.

From Georgetown: Take HWY 17 S approximately 33 miles to Steed Creek Road (Road #10-1032)
From Monks Corner: Take HWY 52 to HWY 402 to Huger. Cross over Hwy 41 at the flashing red light and you will be on Steed Creek Road. Forest Service Center is 3 miles on your right.
From Mt. Pleasant/I-526: Take HWY 17. Drive 5.2 miles past the Sewee Visitor Center and turn left on Steed Creek Road. Forest Service Center is approximately 9 miles on the left.

Saturday, October 20th 7:30-10am, the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will partner with the Rotary Club of Mt. Pleasant to provide free shoes to deserving school students in the East Cooper area. The Mount Pleasant Target Store will provide the venue and children will be given the opportunity to select and receive a new pair of shoes and socks. The event is also an opportunity for the Wando High School Interact Club, College of Charleston Roteract Club, and Rotary Youth Exchange Students to participate along side Rotarians as escort and shoe shopping assistants. This event is always a rewarding day, full of fellowship and fun.

October 2nd Guest Speaker- Eric DeMoura
The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Eric DeMoura, Town Administrator, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.
Mr. DeMoura was appointed to the position of town administrator in October 2010. He currently manages nine departments, 700 employees, and a $158 million annual budget for the fourth largest municipality in South Carolina. Mr. DeMoura has received the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association. Prior to his appointment as town administrator, Mr. DeMoura served as deputy town administrator for four years.
Prior to joining the Town of Mount Pleasant, Mr. DeMoura held the position of deputy mayor in Taunton, Massachusetts, where he assisted the mayor in the management of 30 city departments and a $130 million budget. As chief advisor to the mayor, he lobbied state and federal governments to secure funding and improve education and aging infrastructure. Reforming budget processes, purchasing procedures, and personnel policies defined the quality of his position in Taunton.
Additional experience included the position of County Manager of Caswell County, North Carolina, where Mr. DeMoura began his public service. Highlights included the management of 23 county departments, 250 employees, and a $20 million budget.
Mr. DeMoura is a graduate of Clemson University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in public administration. He also holds a County Administration Certification from the University of North Carolina.
Mr. DeMoura is past president of the South Carolina City and County Management Association. He is a member of the International City / County Management Association and the South Carolina City and County Management Association.

Brian Rowe is now entering his third season as Managing Director at PURE Theatre, a professional theatre company dedicated to presenting in the Lowcountry award-winning professional theatre that enlivens thought, ignites dialogue, and expands consciousness. Prior to joining PURE, Brian served as a development officer and fundraising consultant for numerous non-profit organizations in the Baltimore-Washington region. Brian holds an M.F.A. in Theatre Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Charleston (WV). He currently lives in West Ashley with his wife, Megan, and Sage, the best cat in the whole wide world.
