The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, February 12th, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Matt Sloan, President, DI Development Co. on Cainhoy Plantation, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

In 1992, Matt Sloan was part of the team that created the visionary master plan for Daniel Island in Charleston, SC. Formerly a project manager representing the Guggenheim family who previously owned the island, he went on to maintain overall responsibility for development, marketing and sales activities within the community as it developed. In addition to Daniel Island, he is responsible for management and operations of the newly developing community of Carnes Crossroads in Summerville, SC and the 9,000 acre Cainhoy development, the last developable major greenfield site within the city of Charleston. A member of the Urban Land Institute, he earned a Master’s degree at Columbia University School of Architecture and a B.S. in science and engineering at State University of New York at Buffalo. Extremely active in community service, Sloan’s past and current non-profit board service includes the YMCA of Greater Charleston, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce, Lowcountry Housing Trust, Porter Gaud School, Junior Achievement, Daniel Island Community Fund, Charleston Regional Development Alliance, Roper Saint Francis Foundation and Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, February 5th, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Billie Attaway, President of Read Aloud Technologies, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Billie is a recovering entrepreneur having built and sold several businesses.  He is also a business coach, friend, father, athlete, life time learner and a man of great faith. 

His major purpose is to help and save children.  He focuses on and supports childrens issues through: United Way, Victory Junction Gang camp, Camp Sertoma, Seacoast Church, his own non profit One by one and others.

The past focus of the non-profit was preventing child abandonment and the current focus is education, reading and literacy, improving both in SC, the US and the world.

He currently helps lead or advises three companies: 

Read Aloud Tech an Ed.Tcch firm. 

MMRR a software firm helping Associations and Chambers manage, recruit and retain their members, and

Yellow Card a Fin Tech company providing international money transfers using Bitcoin as the underlying currency.

He also coaches twelve CEO’s in diverse industries between $1mm and $100mm.

He has won the Entrepreneur of the Year award and placing on the Inc. 500 (Fastest growing privately held companies) twice.  He is a member of the Young Presidents Organization and a past Rotarian.

Today he is going to talk with us on the problems, inefficiencies in our current education system and some possible solutions to reading and literacy.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Denise Kish, Administrator of Mount Pleasant Gardens: Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Denise Kish is an Long Term Care And Assisted Living Licensed Administrator who guides organizations in creating operational cultures of excellence in the long term care industry.  As  the Administrator of Mount Pleasant Gardens she is leading a team of professionals caring for those with dementia and Alzheimer’s.  Prior to coming to South Carolina Denise spend 18 years in long term care in New Jersey where she was the Executive Director of Professional and Organization Development focusing on establishing new areas of service and establishing a culture of Person and Family Centered Care at a comprehensive senior-life, short-term rehab, and mental-health care facility in North Jersey.  She spend over 15 years serving the State of New Jersey in changing cultures in long term care and is a speaker for many associations on senior care.  Denise’s passion is to assemble teams that are passionate about the work they do and the families they care for.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, January 15th, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Vicki Johnson, Manager at Charleston Fisher House, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Johnson is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant. She spent 20 years in the military and served in Desert Storm, 2 years in Afghanistan. She is a member of Lowcountry Women’s Veterans Association and serves on Joint Base Advisory Council. The Charleston Fisher House is the 73rd Fisher House in the United States and the first one built in residential community.  They raised $4M to purchase property.  The neighbors have embraced the Fisher House and the veterans and families that come stay there say that helps them in their recovery.  The building cost $9M in construction costs and the VA helped pay for the building.  It can serve 16 families and since January 2018 over 600 families have been served at Charleston Fisher House.  The house includes a common kitchen, dining, library, and residential suites.  The Charleston Fisher House is the only 3 story Fisher House which is unique because the layout allows all 16 rooms to be handicap accessible.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Eric DeMoura, Town Administrator, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Mr. DeMoura was appointed to the position of town administrator in October 2010. He currently manages nine departments, 700 employees, and a $158 million annual budget for the fourth largest municipality in South Carolina. Mr. DeMoura has received the Credentialed Manager designation from the International City/County Management Association. Prior to his appointment as town administrator, Mr. DeMoura served as deputy town administrator for four years.

Prior to joining the Town of Mount Pleasant, Mr. DeMoura held the position of deputy mayor in Taunton, Massachusetts, where he assisted the mayor in the management of 30 city departments and a $130 million budget. As chief advisor to the mayor, he lobbied state and federal governments to secure funding and improve education and aging infrastructure. Reforming budget processes, purchasing procedures, and personnel policies defined the quality of his position in Taunton.

Additional experience included the position of County Manager of Caswell County, North Carolina, where Mr. DeMoura began his public service. Highlights included the management of 23 county departments, 250 employees, and a $20 million budget.

Mr. DeMoura is a graduate of Clemson University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in public administration. He also holds a County Administration Certification from the University of North Carolina.

Mr. DeMoura is past president of the South Carolina City and County Management Association. He is a member of the International City / County Management Association and the South Carolina City and County Management Association.

Below are photos of some of the speakers. Committee chairs in attendance participated in training of Grants Management, Global Grants, Membership, Youth Programs, Public image through Social media, and “how to” sessions on the District Database and Rotary Club Central. The Keynote Speaker was Past RI VP Anne Matthews.

The East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club will meet Tuesday, September 25th, 2018 at 7:30 a.m. in The Cooper River Room at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. We are pleased to have Brian Rowe, Managing Director of Pure Theatre, as our speaker. Breakfast catered by Dish and Design Catering and Events.

Brian Rowe is now entering his third season as Managing Director at PURE Theatre, a professional theatre company dedicated to presenting in the Lowcountry award-winning professional theatre that enlivens thought, ignites dialogue, and expands consciousness.  Prior to joining PURE, Brian served as a development officer and fundraising consultant for numerous non-profit organizations in the Baltimore-Washington region.  Brian holds an M.F.A. in Theatre Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Charleston (WV). He currently lives in West Ashley with his wife, Megan, and Sage, the best cat in the whole wide world.
